You're absolutely right about that! To be more precise, the current option is the best out of the default ones (not including custom types).

I'll be making a change to my permalink structure shortly to /%postname%/ as well.

After all there seems to be no use for having the date as dir folders. And this version does much better for SEO purposes. Or so I have tested.
