I titled this post the way it is to capture your attention (i guess I succeeded … didn’t i?) but more correctly, it should have been “How Does Google Images Work” or “How Images Get Ranked on Google Images“.

Ok, in the past I’ve heard that images get on Google Images because of their “ALT” attribute of the <img> tag on the webpage that they reside but from what I’ve seen so far, that’s so not true (although that’s a minute factor).

There are many times when I search for a certain keyword but the images returned are totally unrelated to my keyword.

Here’s what I found out … images are tagged largely by the 20-50 words before and after the image (by and large, the text searched for can be anywhere on the page). Another point to that is that the words before the image are weighted slightly more (just a tad bit more) compared to the words that come after the image (you can verify that with some of the keywords I suggest at the end).

So here’s what it looks like …..

Another important factor is the proximity of the keywords before and after the image. So between the 2 following cases, B would come out ahead (all things being equal)

A:

xxx xxx xxx xxx fishing bait xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx <image> xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx

B:

xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx fishing bait xxx xxx <image> xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx

Needless to say … if the keyword is present before AND after the image, it gets ranked higher as well (once again, these are just my findings).

Points To Note:

1. I’ve not seen any correlation of rankings of site with keywords searched on Google Images and the normal Google search
2. I’ve not checked if Live Images (MSN) or Yahoo’s works the same way
3. Age of the page is a factor from my findings (i.e Older the better)
4. The filename of the image affects the rankings as well (try “miserable failure”)
5. It takes quite a while for Google to index images (much slower compared to webpages)

1. Yahoo Groups (Warning: Some indecent pics)
2. Warrior Tank
3. Claim Your Copy
4. Miserable Failure
5. Google PageRank

P.P.S If you google about ranking on google images, there’s a whole bunch of crap and assumptions out there that I see. I’m obviously biased … but this is the most definitive guide/finding/whatever that I see on the subject.

*Drum roll please*

1) URL / Domain – Make sure the keywords you’re targeting are somewhere in your domain or url.

E.g If my site is broadly about fishing, then I want to preferably have the word “fishing” in my domain name like fishingresource or fishingfreaks or whatever. And taking it one step further, if I wanted to target fishing baits for a page on my domain, I would do something like fishingresource.com/fishing-baits.htm … Got it?

2) Title Tag

Be sure to have your target keywords somewhere in your <Title> tag. Especially near the front. It’s a science! *wink*

3) Meta Keywords

Again … be sure to have your keywords in your meta keywords tag. Oh and have related terms there as well.

Tip: Head over to my Gearbox page and look for the link to Quintura. It will help you identify related keywords (technically, it’s called LSI)

4) Meta Description

Write this in a natural language and just like the <Title> tag, have your keywords in there and near the front. Keep it short and succint otherwise there will be keyword dilution.

5) H1 and H2 Tags

Need I say more? This is to help the search engine crawlers confirm what your page is all about. So using “fishing baits” again, you would have something like “fishing baits” as your H1 tag and “types of fishing baits” as your H2 tag. Make sense?

6) Onpage Relevancy

This stems down to your actual content and keyword density. If you want to get your page about fishing baits ranked well, the SE (search engine) would expect to see related terms (refer to tip #3) on the page. Also, be sure to have your keyword/keyphrase repeated a couple of times (but to the stage of keyword spamming) as well.

7) BACKLINKS, BACKLINKS, BACKLINKS

Ok … enough of onsite optimization (tips #1-6).

Now this step is literally the MOST IMPORTANT (say that again pls) of all. You must get lots of backlinks to the page you want to be ranked for. Like anything else, there’s a right and wrong way of doing things.

With backlinks, you want to be sure to have your keywords as your anchor text. Not sure what I’m talking about?

Take a look at this:

So basically it’s like this:

<a href=”the page you want to be ranked for” title=”your keywords”>”Your Keywords”</a>

Tip: Btw, make sure the backlinks you get are from pages without the “nofollow”. Google it to find out more.

Summary:

Out of the 10 sites, 2 are blogspot hosted and oddly enough, they hold the 1st and 10th spots.

2 sites opted not to use any of the meta keyword/description tags. Of the remaining 8, 5 did utilize both the keyword and description tags. 2 sites decided to use ONLY the meta description tag while leaving the meta keyword tag only.

With regards to the title tag, every site except for Bidvertiser had the words “make money online” as their 1st 3 words in the title tag. Most of the sites also have “make money online” somewhere on their page as their <H1> tag.

Keyword density for “make money online” ranged from 0.67% to 3.76%.

Every body wants to earn money online while sitting at home. For this many people started making their own web site design and uploaded it. At first people don’t know how to select domain names but now people are aware of them and people know that they should match with the keywords so that more visitors can find and visit their site. The website should follow search engine optimizing rules to attract more visitors. Some people pay for cpc marketing so that one can see their ad on the search engine. There are many other ways for advertising the products that one is selling online. One can also take advertising services from webhost providers or one can hire marketers but internet marketers charges really high as compared to web host providers.

To give you an idea of what these some of these hot keywords are, they are:

• Weight Loss (this phrase is more popular than “how to lose weight”)
• Make money online (or make money from adsense)
• Internet Marketing / Internet Marketing Blog
• Coffee Maker
• etc, etc

Factors which will go into the report:

• <Title> tag
• <Meta> tags
• <Header> tags
• Domain/URL (Do .com/.net/.org matter?)
• Order of Keywords
• Keyword Density
• Google PR (this has been a topic lately)
• Age of Webpage
• Do singular/plural forms of words matter?
• etc, etc

1. Login to your WP backend
2. Click on “Options”
3. Click on “Permalinks”
4. Select the 2nd radio button (i.e Date and name based) or choose to go custom with (1) /%category%/%postname%/ or just (2) /%postname%/
5. Click on “Update Permalink Structure”
6. Done! =)
